As we age, grey hair is more-or-less inevitable. The good news, though, is that it’s becoming more popular to ditch the dye and embrace those grey locks. So what sort of grey hair treatments are available to ensure your straight, wavy or curly grey hair looks its best?

10 of the Top Grey Hair Treatments

While there is no permanent solution for grey hair and there is no grey hair cure, the top grey hair products can make a huge difference to how your crowning glory looks and feels. Because if you have seen silver strands making an appearance here and there, then no doubt you’ve noticed that the texture is different.

Grey hair is generally drier and more coarse. It can also be harder to control. But don’t despair of your grey hair - help is at hand!

Here are 10 of the top selling treatments and products for grey hair.

Top 10 grey hair products

Phyto RE30

  • Type: Anti-grey treatment
  • Cost: around £40+ for 50ml

If you search for a premature greying of hair treatment, then the chances are you’ll come across Phyto RE30 at some point. In the UK alone there are around 150 searches per month for this grey hair product.

So what’s all the fuss about? Reading the reviews on a third party website might indicate that it’s all smoke and mirrors. Some say it moisturises their hair very well, and a few claim to have seen results after continued use. Others, though, state that it has had no effect on their grey hair, even after many months of use (and a lot of expense).

Mayraki anti-grey

  • Type: Anti-grey treatment
  • Cost: around £85+ for 2 x 100ml

Per millilitre, Mayraki anti grey restoring treatment is cheaper than Phyto RE30. Though buying it may require a higher initial outlay. Here in the UK over 200 people per month search online for this anti grey hair treatment.

Does it work? Reviews on the whole are more positive than those for Phyto RE30, but this is on the company’s own website. At the time of writing, the Trustpilot score for Mayraki is 2.1 out of five. 73% of reviews give the company just one star. Some even report adverse reactions to the formula. Our verdict? One to steer well clear of.

what are the best grey hair treatments

Davines Alchemic

  • Type: Shampoo & conditioner
  • Cost: around £20-25 for a 280ml or 250ml bottle or pot

According to The Strategist UK, three top hairdressers recommended the Davines Alchemic range to them. These shampoos and conditioners are formulated to brighten hair, whether it’s natural or coloured.

What impresses us is that the range includes a formula for every hair colour, from cool or warm red to the darkest chocolate brown or black. This includes an Alchemic shampoo and conditioner for cool blonde or grey tones. This is designed to ensure grey hair stays silvery rather than brassy - and apparently hairdressers reckon it works.

John Frieda Shimmering Silver

  • Type: Shampoo & conditioner
  • Cost: around £6 for 250ml

If you want to bag a high street buy, turn to John Frieda. Their Frizz-Ease hair serum has long been a cult classic, so you can count on them to come up with the goods when it comes to grey hair care. Enter the Shimmering Silver range for ageing hair.

Of course we love all that shimmers. We sell silk! The promise of moisturised, smooth strands along with a high shine and no brassiness whatsoever wins us over too though.

White Hot Hair

  • Type: Shampoo, conditioner & treatments
  • Cost: around £12-14 per 50ml to 200ml product

White Hot Hair is a UK-based company. They produce a range of seven products, all specially formulated for grey hair. These are the Brilliant and Glorious shampoos and conditioners, the ‘Shooshing’ Creme, a Lifeshine Oil and the Intense Lustre Mask.

What we love is that the White Hot Hair range is very affordable. Some brands available in UK supermarkets are similarly priced. You can also save when buying one of the bundles, and doing this means paying around £10 for each instead of £12 to £14.

White Hot hair was brought to our attention by Byrdie, whose article featured a real-life silver hair wearer. The fact that they specialise in this niche and offer affordable prices wins this range our vote.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer

  • Type: Deep conditioner
  • Cost: around £35+ for 150ml

Glamour also recommends Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer deep conditioning treatment. In just three minutes, this wonder product can nourish and hydrate even the driest dry hair. It’s like a hair gloss for grey hair, and can work in as little as three minutes. For maximum strength, shine and flexibility, though, Glamour recommends leaving it to work for 20 minutes.

Aveda Nutriplenish leave-in conditioner

  • Type: Leave-in conditioner
  • Cost: around £16+ for 200ml

Vogue magazine reckons Aveda’s Nutriplenish is the best leave-in conditioner for silver haired types. It’s ideal for application before styling, and UV filters can even protect hair from the sun. The formula is free from silicones and sulphates, and is packed with natural, nourishing plant extracts.

Bumble and Bumble hair powder

  • Type: Dry shampoo
  • Cost: around £30+ for 125g

If it’s a quick touch-up you want, Bumble and Bumble’s Hair Powder is recommended by Glamour magazine. Available in ‘Brownish’ or ‘Blondish’, it refreshes the colour, absorbs any excess oil and can also add texture.

A silk pillowcase

  • Type: Pillowcase
  • Cost: around £43+

The Byrdie piece that alerted us to White Hot Hair also extolled the virtues of using a silk pillowcase. Sleeping on a mulberry silk pillowcase has done wonders for the health of the writer’s hair.

This is because silk causes less friction while you sleep. As the surface is so much smoother, hair glides effortlessly over the sleek fabric, resulting in hair that’s more tamed with less frizz and dryness. A silk pillowcase will also last for years, rather than weeks or months.

silk scrunchies are kind to hair

A silk scrunchie

  • Type: Hair ties
  • Cost: around £30+ for a set of 4

Using a silk hair tie is another way Byrdie’s silver surfer controls her grey hair. She swears by securing her hair in place at night, before sleeping on a pure silk pillowcase.

Silk scrunchies are ideal for use by day too, as they're kinder to hair and look far more luxurious than any other fabric. They also last for far longer than any hair care formula you can buy!

Did you know? You can shop for silk pillowcases and scrunchies in our online store!
